It’s not fifty percent, I think it’s more like ninety

March 21, 2008

Our friends over at milliondollarwebtv.com  are reporting on their blog from a survey found from Pew Internet where the survey says ‘50% of Internet users are watching videos’. I dispute that (in a friendly way that is) actually I think it’s more than that perhaps 80%, because we all know teens are the first ones online in the morning and at the end of the day and sometimes when they are in school and when there IS no school or on weekends, holidays and on online ALL day. Now just because they are teens or young adults you can’t say they are not watching great interesting and even perhaps watching video ads, they see video ads for music and cars on all those nice friendly social sites like myspace.com and facebook.com too.

If you are thinking about or even surveyed adults online that work online all day, like what we do here, and now doing too with all types of videos that can go from entertainment to online marketing to affiliate marketing, that could also make those numbers higher when we see those coming in and watching them. If you do web design, seo consulting, online video editing or even merchants now, like one of our partners selling furniture. Again those numbers and that survey needs to be re-done quick. There are just too many people online now that once they get hooked there is no stopping them from getting online and eventually at least one time throughout the day see a video either for fun, business or other. What about videos on cell phones,? So again not sure how they actually structured that survey but I think it could be 90%, if not more, of Internet user are watching videos not just for entertainment purposes but for training, buying products and even for advertising their brand like on milliondollarwebtv.com

I do agree with our friends at MillionDollarWebTV that the next few years will see even more growth and demand for videos and the time to get your message up is now.

Just take a look at how many pixels milliondollarwebtv.com has left now, just a few months ago they had all one million left, that means those getting their video ads up now know too that perhaps one day the next survey will show 100% of internet users are watching videos.

If you agree with me then commment below how often you view videos online and show  Pew how you disagree too. Not scientific of course but atleast for the fun of it.

Jorge, thank you for your insights. You’re right about tweens and teens making up a good portion, possibly even the majority of web video viewers (and “user generated content” video makers.) Statistically 90+ % of in these age groups watch online video every day. They are a big market now and will become THE market in a few years.

The second biggest group are office workers, 60-80 % of which also watch web tv and video daily but would not acknowledge doing so during work hours. The people who tune in less are the older generations. Then there are the ones without broadband connection, still about 20-25% of the population. Putting all these together could explain Pew’s statistics.

With broadband becoming universally available, whether by cable or wireless, and web video coming to the home tv set (like Apple TV), viewer statistics will most likely move up to 90+ percent in 3-6 years.

Got something to say?
